In 2005, David earned his BFA from the Academy of Art in San Francisco, California, specializing in matte painting and compositing. Shortly after David began at Disney Toon Studios as a background painter, and from this went onto to work at Luma Pictures on Underworld: Evolution as a digital paint artist. David also worked for Rhythm & Hues Studios where he finished shots for Garfield 2, Superman Returns, and Night at the Museum.
While working at high quality film studios, David also worked as a freelance matte painter for various studios and independent films. David has worked along side other master matte painters like Alp Altiner, Chris Thunig, Levi Peterffy, and Fabio Zungrone.
David is currently working at Blizzard Entertainment as a Senior Cinematic Artist II. Work includes look development, matte painting, lighting, rendering, and compositing to finalize a shot. Some of David's credits include Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty, World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, WoW: Cataclysm, Diablo 3, and the soon to be released WoW: Mists of Pandaria
Photoreal Matte Painting - Part 1
Blizzard Entertainment's David Luong returns to CGWorkshops with a new and updated Matte Painting workshop. The workshop will be in two 8 week semesters (the first class prepares you for the second, but you don't need to take both.) In Part 1, David will work with you to prepare photoreal matte paintings.
